Chapter Programs

EAA 162 has monthly meetings on the third Thursday of each month. The evening begins with a light dinner (at a suggested donation of $5) at 6:30 pm, followed by a chapter meeting and program beginning at 7:00 pm. All are welcome to attend. Below is a list of some previous programs.

Flying The Midwest and Canada
Peter Cassidy shared his experience flyin the the Dakotas, Montana, Wyoming and Western Canada around Calgary. He also talked about how Canadian regulations differ from the U.S., how to manage the US and Canadian Customs process and the new ICAO flight plan form which is now required on all International flights.

Stephen Port's RV-8 Project
Stephen is 9 months into his RV-8 quick build project. In addition to discussing this work, Stephen showed his considerable inventory of 1/4 scale RC aircraft.

My Aircraft Painting Experience
Rene Aldrich discussed her experience in having her Giles 202 painted. The design and appearance is stunning. It is amazing how the paint job transformed the plane. In spite of carefully researching the vendor, Rene's experience was rather painful and she still has some issues to be resolved.

Painting An Airplane
Stephen Port discussed aircraft painting process and types of paints. He also showed us the beautiful paint job he did on his RANS. Chris Carter had his RV there for an owners perspective having gotten it back from the paint shop in Texas only three weeks prior.

Airplane Upgrades
Steve Kravitz and Andy Burton discussed their recent avionics upgrades. Steve did a complete avionics upgrade to his Comanche 250 and stressed the value of reading the manuals carefully and talking to installers and tech support beforehand and during the install in order to get it "right". Andy installed Aspen panel a year ago, but recently decided to redo his panel layout and add an engine monitor to his Twin Comanche. Peter Cassidy, who does not yet have a glass cockpit in his Bonanza, discussed the considerations he has uncovered in a year's research of the subject.

XM vs. ADS-B Weather
Peter Cassidy has flown with XM weather for years and recently added ADS-B weather to his iPad. The services are similar but there are important differences. He compared the two services and his experience with how well they perform. He prefers XM with ADS-B for a backup. In addition, he talked about strategies for dealing with EFB failures, which are bound to happen.

Peter Cassidy discussed how the smarts that make our modern GPS navigators so great come at a price we often don't appreciate. For IFR use, it's important to understand how the logic of your GPS navigator handles various situations. The last thing you need on an approach is to be wondering what the GPS is going to do next.

The Rise and Fall of Flying Boats
Award-winning historical fiction author Jamie Dodson explored the "flying boats" of the first half of the 20th century. Jamie took us through the evolution of the Sikorsky series of designs and explained why flying boats were attractive to early airlines, cargo haulers, explorers and the military. Jamie's day job is Intelligence Officer at the Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, AL.

John Beam, who is a regular at the great Oshkosh flyin, shared tips on flying into and departing AirVenture. He also discussed places to stay and unique things to do while there.

Hangar Crawl / Cookout
President, Rick Spencer, did the honors on the grill at Shelby's hangar for a most enjoyable evening of food and socializing. We then visited some other hangars to see what's new including helping Bob Hickman install the wings on his RV-7A project..

Aspen Glass Panel Upgrade
Thinking of upgrading your instrument panel to glass. Andy Burton just upgraded his twin Comanche to Aspen. Andy discussed the Aspen capabilities, how he configured the system, and shared his experience with the upgrade process. Jeff Zimerlee was present and he installed an Aspen in his Baron at the same time.
